I am reaching out to share a distressing situation concerning my daughter, her ex-military husband, and their two now teenage daughters, who are currently residing in South Africa. They are the proud owners and operators of a cherished side-street café-deli that once thrived as a vibrant hub in the community.

However, their business has encountered significant hurdles due to the extortion tactics employed by a local gang of unemployed youth. These individuals, never having contributed positively to society, have resorted to demanding payments through a "protect and pay" scheme, thereby jeopardizing the the stability of my daughter's family business and their personal safety.

The breaking point was the repercussions of declining sales and the oppressive demands of this gang that left their deli struggling to stay financially afloat. It has become painfully apparent that there is a concerted effort to drive out non-indigenous small businesses from the area, putting not only their livelihoods at risk but also the economic well-being of the entire community.

Amidst the ongoing social unrest, and in light of these dire circumstances, I am compelled to assist my daughter and her family in relocating them to the United States.

The decision was not made lightly, but born out of necessity. They needed to seek refuge and a fresh start where they could pursue their dreams without fear of persecution or intimidation.

My plan for them involves supporting them in opening a similar business in my local area, the growing cities of Goodyear/Buckeye, Arizona. I can aid their efforts by volunteering my time with real estate and city contacts, advertising, and promoting business.

Opportunities abound here for those with entrepreneurial spirit. With their expertise in the food industry, my daughter and her family can thrive once more and contribute to their community, free from the shackles of fear and oppression.

Currently, they are caught in a crossfire. It is crucial to understand the gravity of the challenges my daughter and her family face in South Africa. The gang's coercive tactics not only threaten their business but also their safety and peace of mind. This constant pressure to pay for protection is extortion!

While law enforcement struggles to provide adequate protection, business owners like my daughter and her family are vulnerable and defenseless and in danger of physical harm.

But, Arizona, with its vibrant communities and business-friendly environment, presents an ideal opportunity for them to rebuild their lives and their business. My commitment to assisting them isn't just about familial duty; it's about helping them reclaim their agency and autonomy in the face of adversity.

In South Africa, the entrepreneurial dream for business owners is clouded by the looming crime rate and corruption. The nation's staggering rates of violent crime, spanning murder, rape, and theft, not only jeopardize their personal safety but also pose significant threats their business operations.

Small businesses have become targets of vandalism and arson. South African police reported 14,677 burglaries from businesses from April to June 2022, an increase of approximately 0.3 percent over the previous year.

Corruption further complicates matters by seeping into the society and undermining fair competition and the rule of law for non-indigenous-owned small businesses. It poses a grave risk to individuals and businesses alike. Syndicates, including corrupt law enforcement, employ coercion tactics to extract financial gains, undermining public trust and increasing the challenges faced by small enterprises.

Please support now!

Arizona, with its vibrant communities and business-friendly environment, presents an ideal opportunity for them to rebuild their lives and their business. My dedication to supporting them extends beyond mere family obligation; it's about empowering them to regain control and independence in challenging circumstances.

I humbly seek your generosity, along with my own contribution, to help raise an amount of $8,000 to be used for:

1) Airline tickets for the family of four travelers—two entrepreneurial parents and their two courageous daughters—from Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona. Tickets, including one check-in bag each, averages $4,863 for a family of four at the time of this writing.

2) Additionally, your support will greatly assist in defraying their acclimation expenses, such as car rental and temporary housing, business license, business insurance, storefront lease costs, and utilities, thus empowering them to embark on this journey of renewal with confidence.

Your support isn't just a monetary contribution; it's a lifeline, a beacon of hope for a family in distress. It's a testament to the power of community and compassion, showing that even in the darkest of times, there are still people willing to extend a helping hand.

Together, we can make a difference. Any amount you may be able to contribute will be received with deep humility and gratitude. Thank you for considering our heartfelt appeal.

With heartfelt gratitude,

The Henning Family
