Single Mother Returns to College and Needs Help!

Bookmark and Share

I am a 35 year old woman who has returned to college after 15 years devoted to being a single mother raising a now 17 year old daughter. I am now in my last year of college studying Psychology and I have plans on attending Graduate school once my BA is obtained.

To give a little backround information about myself, I would have to say that I started out as a statistic. I was the product of a broken family, my parents divorced at the age of 10, and I found my self becoming pregnant at the age of 17. I dropped out of highschool in my senior year, but I was determained NOT to cause any more disappointment to my parents by not obtaining my high school diploma. One week after leaving high school, I registered to take my GED Exam and passed. I received my High school diploma in the mail three months later on the day of my baby shower. That was a great accomplishment for me.

At 19 - years - old, I proceeded to move away from my home state and venture off with then a 1 and a half year old baby, and live across the country in a new state where I had no family or friends. This was my individual attempt to gain independence and to become self - sufficient. I immediately enrolled into junior college and attempted to gain my Associates degree while raising my young child alone. I had little to no child support from her father, so the financial burden was solely placed on me. I was always capable of obtaining good jobs which seemed to provide room for advancement, but once employed, I engulfed myself into my job because being able to handle my financial obligations was always a lot more important to me verses living off of the government welfare system.

Now that my daughter is a teenager and months away from turning 18 and off to college this year, I felt that now was the perfect opportunity for me to get out here in the world and accomplish some of those dreams that I unselfishly placed to the side.

With my major being in Psychology and my focus being in Community Psychology, I intend on developing a career focus that will be catoured to young single women of all cultures who have had to indure the strain of single parenthood just as me.

I am requesting help from my fellow people because I would like to attend an international Psychology study abroad with my University in Tanzania, Africa. My financial aid will pay the majority of the cost, but I am still lacking funds to purchase my roundtrip airfare which totals approximately $2000. If I can be assisted in ANY way financially it would be greatly appreciated and you will be comforted in knowing that it is going to a great cause.
